“Peace to the gods” “Peace, Allah”
Knowledge of self was a common theme of Hip Hop in the early 90's, and was primary of theme of Brand Nubian. In the song entitled Wake Up from their debut album, Grand Puba leads the way in expressing positivity and uplifting philosophies in a multi-generational message. Although to some it was a mere trend, it was one that concentrated on true virtues, and was a prime example how music on a mainstream stage can be educational. It's rather hilarious that the other Brand Nubian emcees Sadat X and Lord Jamar, are featured as back up dancers (not to mention they look pretty uncomfortable doing it), because they're role usually consists of adding their own bit of conscious lyricism to a track.
Brand Nubian had an influential career, and here is a video of their humble beginnings. Oh yes…this song was one of the first groups to sample Roy Ayers' Everybody Loves the Sunshine.
