Flying Lotus's Until the Quiet Comes and The Importance of Musical Imagery

Eccentric producer and clairaudient musician, Flying Lotus, released his highly anticipated fourth LP, Until The Quiet Comes, last month. And although he has a diehard fanbase that swears by his music, he has been receiving attention and recognition on a much larger scale due to the brilliance of his music and his sense of artistry.

With collaborations on this new album from the likes of Thom Yorke and

Erykah Badu and sounds that transcend through your emotions and feelings, Flying Lotus succeeds in taking his listeners on a true musical journey. But in all honesty, it is not the album that has caught the attention and left an impact on people worldwide; it is his visual. The short film.

The short film directed by, Kahlil Joseph, consists of a young Black man that has ultimately come to meet his fate and travels through time reminiscing over past experiences. Surrounded by bystanders and a victim of an untold circumstance, he finds a way to escape from his then reality. Storyboard P, the featured dancer in this video, glides through the nooks and crannies of Nickerson Gardens making it seem like a place of mystery and wonder, compared to what initially meets the eye. And although one is left to interpret this video in their own way, there is no underestimating the power of its symbolic imagery and message, along with the music.

It is rare in today's musical climate that you can count on most artists to put out quality music, let alone, a great music video. So viewing Fly Lo's short film for his new album was not only refreshing, but it reminded people why it is important to tell a story through your music. Artists such as Kanye West, R. Kelly, Michael Jackson and others have successfully created videos/short films that bring their music to life. But Flying Lotus has taken this to a whole new level, infusing his multidimensional musical sound to a unique visual. Creativity at its finest.
