Location: Denver, Colorado
Bio:
I was eleven years old and in the sixth grade when Herbie Mann’s Memphis Underground was released in 1969. It was my father’s record…he did not have many records and I don’t remember how he came to own this one. But it opened my ears in a way that what I’d been listening to hadn’t. So much so, that I decided I wanted to learn to play the flute. I learned to play along with my flute to this song and I played it for anyone who would listen (I continued playing flute throughout Jr. High and High School). It was years later that I noticed that Roy Ayers was the vibraphonist on this piece.
For this submission, I have renamed this song Herbie Ayers. The overall construction is based on the song Memphis Underground, but there are elements from at least three other songs in this piece. I composed the solo in the second half of the song after listening to Roy Ayers’s vibraphone solo in Memphis Underground over and over and over again.
