Here is a great video of the charismatic saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. playing one of his more popular songs entitled Winelight. Featured in this video is Grover Washington Jr. on alto, soprano, and tenor sax, Richard Tee on keyboar
ds, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, Paul Griffin on synthesizer, Eric Gale on guitar, Anthony Jackson on bass, and Steve Gadd on drums.
Not only was Grover Washington instrumental in the foundation of what we now know as contemporary jazz, he is one of the most notably sampled jazz artists, with many hip hop artists using his music for inspiration, and in many cases with little or no variation. His sound was adopted by the Hip Hop community because there were numerous jazz tracks and albums that seamlessly translated into hip hop beats. His premature passing in 1999 was not only felt in the jazz world, but was also recognized by hip hop fans as well. His iconic full beard and baby afro is etched in the mind of many when it comes to Grover, but not as much as his soulful horn and progressive sound that still holds tremendous weight, even today.
