“It’s not the presents, its the presence of the essence…”

During this time of year, we pay tribute to all the Fathers and their tireless efforts. Unfortunately for various reasons, there are some children who grow up without a tight relationship with their fathers, and in 1991, Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs addressed the growing problem in the community of absentee fathers. The message was simple, Be A Father To Your Child, and the sample was none other than Roy Ayers’ classic, Searching.

This is arguably one of Roy Ayers’ most known Hip Hop samples, as it features Ed O.G. rhyming the loop of the first four bars of Searching layered with a funky 90s-esque drum beat. When you hear the saxophone solo on Searching, you can’t help but to think of the Ed O.G. hook where they looped the first two bars of Justo Almario and turned it into the hook. Although the hook abruptly cuts off the Almario solo, it’s the hook that the song has given us, therefore we have no choice but to accept it! Anyway, Ed O.G.’s positive lyrics and thought provoking message are most definitely appreciated, and the result is a song that continues to withstand the test of time.

Enjoy the song, and give thanks to all of the fathers who took Ed O.G.s message to heart.
