In the early – mid 90’s, Digable Planets were a household name, despite the fact most people couldn’t name a song besides Cool like Dat. They’ve been labeled as “One Hit Wonders” and to many, they faded into oblivion after their first single. After their mega hit single, they developed a cult following consisting of a sound that blended Jazz and Hip Hop seamlessly, while having political and socialist undertones. Their 2nd album Blowout Comb was littered with pro-blackness and activism while displaying a progression of sound that many of the first generation fair-weather fans never gave a true listen. As time passed, the sophomore album Blowout Comb is thought by many to be one of the most progressive albums of the time, and is on many “top 10 list” of credible music critics.
The second single of the second album was Dial 7 which featured a B-side track called Dedicated, which features only Butterfly aka Ishmail rhyming over a smooth, melodic instrumental that is nothing less than perfection. Unfortunately, Dedication never made the album, so as a result, only owners of the Dial 7 12 inch single were fortunate enough to hear this track, so many of the people who revered the Blowout Comb were not exposed to it.
Below is the audio for Dedicated, which is needed to complete the entirety of the classic album Blowout Comb.
